Figma's shares ended last week at a 270% premium to their IPO price, reigniting an uncomfortable debate on Wall Street: are IPOs being mispriced? While the dramatic spike grabbed headlines and reinforced positive sentiment towards the company, critics say underwriters vastly underestimated investor demand and left too much money on the table. In earlier years, direct listings, which allowed existing shareholders to sell directly into the market, were touted as a fix. Slack, Coinbase and Roblox took this route. But the approach has largely fallen out of favor, mainly because it doesn't allow companies to raise capital. Now, some (including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong) are floating the idea of tokenized IPOs as a more efficient alternative. The concept: tap into on-chain investor demand to get a more accurate read on market interest. But for now, the structure remains unclear and regulatory uncertainty looms. While SEC Chair Paul Atkins has expressed support for tokenization, mainstream adoption is still distant.
