Gross Margin is Cool, but Contribution Margin is Cooler There's a lot of talk on here about the necessity of having high gross margins if you are going to have any chance of success in CPG. And it's true, but gross margins are fool's gold and don't matter nearly as much as contribution margins. You could have 80% gross margins and still fail if your contribution margins aren't high enough. Not sure how to calculate contribution margins? Start with your gross margin and then deduct all the variable expenses tied to marketing, selling, making, and shipping your products. That means trade spend, commissions, pick/pack/ship fees, payment processing, sales incentives, etc. You should do this per product line and per channel. If you're an omnichannel brand you might think your margins are better online than in store, but did you burden that channel with all of the costs hidden below the line to support that channel? Did you include customer acquisition costs, and your e-commerce team costs? The inverse can be true as well. Maybe for you margins look better in brick and mortar compared to online, but did you take into account the cost of the sales team, slotting, brokers, field marketing, etc.? What you find may challenge your assumptions about your profitability.

NEWS: CELSIUS Holdings is acquiring energy drink competitor Alani Nu for $1.8 billion in cash and stock, aiming to counteract its recent sales decline and enhance its marketing capabilities. Founded in 2018 by fitness influencer Katy Hearn, Alani Nu has experienced rapid growth through social media promotion by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Addison Rae. This acquisition will enable Celsius (with a market cap of $6 billion) to expand into supplements and snacks, strengthening its position against other competing beverage companies.

2025 Forecasts 1: Cocoa prices will subside at least 30% 2: Consumer prices will decline with incoming congress regulations and DOGE 3: Consumers spending will rise 1-3% with ease in pricing 4: Non-alcoholic drinks will continue to grow 5: Small CPG brands will grow or die. It will continue to be a tough year as capital is expected to remain tight. Networking is key. 6: Egg prices will be higher with bird flu problems persisting 7: Digital ad spending will rise 10-20% 8: Live social advertising will gain more traction 9: Big brands will undergo transformation as Kennedy plans to cut unhealthy ingredients and suffer a 3-5% decline in sales 10: Protein will be king 👑 💪
