A new report, Reinventing the Cycle: Adapting Relationship Fundraising for Donors Who Use DAFs, by the DAF Research Collaborative uncovers best practices for donor advised fund (DAF) fundraising as DAFs are growing in popularity among donors. DAFs are charitable giving accounts that donors set up at sponsoring organizations, which then make grants to other charities at the donors’ request. Based on interviews with professional fundraisers, the report offers strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding DAF donors. The report also includes a DAF-specific fundraising cycle outlining how the funds change nonprofit organizations’ fundraising management, while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities for nonprofits. “Interviews with the fundraisers made it clear that DAFs affect every stage of the fundraising cycle,” said Genevieve Shaker, PhD, professor of Philanthropic Studies and Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. “This illustrates that a tailored approach to the cycle is necessary.” Shaker authored the report along with Brigham Young University researchers Rachel M. Sumsion, MPA, and H. Daniel Heist, PhD, under the auspices of the DAF Research Collaborative. Working in Philanthropy vs. Being Philanthropic: A Personal Reflection For those of us deeply engaged in the work of philanthropy, advising nonprofits, designing social impact programs, mobilizing funds, and supporting changemakers, it's easy to separate what we do from how we live. We see ourselves as facilitators of good, not necessarily the givers. But that line is blurrier than we often admit. To work in philanthropy is to build the infrastructure that makes giving strategic, scalable, and sustainable. It’s budgets, theories of change, stakeholder engagement, and long-term systems. It’s the architecture behind impact. But to live a philanthropic life is something different and deeply personal. It’s choosing generosity as a way of being. It’s saying yes to people when no one is watching. It’s sacrificial giving, consistent compassion, and the quiet commitment to uplift others, not because it’s your job, but because it’s your heart. My wife and I recently reflected on this. We've both unconsciously lived it and worked in it, yet often hesitate to name it. Like many, we feel there’s always more to do. But today, I’m choosing to pause and say: if you’re doing the work and living the mission, salute yourself. This journey needs people who build and people who give and when you do both, you’re building something sacred.
