Mega-Deal: U.S. Telecom Giant AT&T to Buy Spectrum Licenses from EchoStar Corporation in $23 Billion Deal 💰📱 AT&T has agreed to purchase certain wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar in an all-cash transaction for ~$23 billion. The licenses cover virtually every market across the U.S, over 400 markets in total, significantly strengthening AT&T’s low-band and mid-band spectrum holdings. AT&T intends to finance the spectrum purchase transaction with cash on hand and incremental borrowings. The transaction is expected to close in mid-2026 subject to regulatory approval. Breaking the Back of Treasury Repo: The Dawn of 24/7 On-Chain Financing As a seasoned (aka old) bond trader and blockchain/DeFi enthusiast. This seems like a big moment. Street firms like Bank of America, Citadel Securities, DTCC, Société Générale, Tradeweb, and Circle did the first real-time on-chain U.S. Treasury repo with USDC on the Canton Network. It settled instantly on a Saturday. That skips old systems that only work weekdays. Prime brokers turned DTCC Treasuries into on-chain tokens. They used them as collateral for USDC loans. This isn’t a test. Blockchain lets assets move fast, anytime, with instant settlement. This is in the $27T+ U.S. Treasuries market. TradFi and DeFi are coming together. It’s the next milestone the tokenization boom. Experts think it changes finance. It links to other tokenized Treasuries on blockchains like XRPL. It connects to asset managers using tokens for yields. Legislation allows regulated real-world assets. Banks are handling tokenized T-Bills. As Stablecoins proliferate, issuers become increasingly important influencers of rates. When rates increase, onchain investors have historically redeemed stables for fiat, which they place in high yielding off-chain investments. If Fed wishes to preserve their influence, they will champion onchain finance, which tames redemptions and repositions treasuries as the substrate for fiscal policy. This is already happening, and the convergence of onchain/offchain finance is only just beginning. It seems that fears of stables undermining central planners is overstated. Instead, Fed will tokenize treasuries to increase policy efficacy.
