CDI Regional Director

Employment Type: Direct Hire

Work Environment: Fully Remote (National Travel as Needed)

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (flexibility required outside standard hours)

Compensation: $115,000 – $175,000 base salary

Bonus: 10%–15% annual bonus potential


Position Summary

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced CDI Regional Director to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs across multiple acute care facilities. This role is responsible for driving accurate, complete, and compliant clinical documentation that supports quality outcomes, severity of illness, risk adjustment, and appropriate reimbursement.


The CDI Regional Director collaborates closely with senior leadership, physicians, nursing, case management, and coding teams to advance documentation excellence, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement initiatives across assigned regions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute the strategic vision for CDI operations across multiple facilities
  • Direct, monitor, and analyze CDI performance metrics, including DRG accuracy, worksheet completion, and trending analytics
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for DRG methodologies, documentation standards, and compliant query practices
  • Collaborate with regional and national leadership, physician groups, and interdisciplinary teams to improve documentation processes and data integrity
  • Build and maintain effective interdepartmental, intradepartmental, and vendor relationships
  • Ensure CDI programs comply with all federal, state, and regulatory requirements
  • Develop, monitor, and report on operational goals, objectives, and budgets
  • Analyze performance outcomes and implement corrective action plans as needed
  • Lead, coach, and develop CDI leadership and staff to drive engagement and performance
  • Maintain current knowledge of AHA Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines and CDI best practices
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in HIM, Coding, or Case Management
  • Acute care Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment
  • Ability to travel nationally based on operational needs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multi-facility or regional CDI leadership experience
  • Advanced CDI certifications (CDIP, CCDS)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • RHIT or RHIA credential

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership, accountability, and team-building capabilities
  • Advanced knowledge of Medicare Part A; working knowledge of Medicare Part B
  • Intermediate understanding of disease pathophysiology and pharmacology
  • Strong knowledge of MS-DRG classification and reimbursement methodologies
  • Ability to identify documentation improvement opportunities and develop compliant clinical queries
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory and compliance environments
  • Experience developing auditing, monitoring, and performance improvement programs
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Reliable attendance and accurate time reporting in a telecommuting environment


Education and Experience

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program (ADN required; BSN preferred) OR
  • Graduate of an accredited Health Information Management program (RHIT or RHIA preferred)
  • Current, active RN license or CCS credential
  • Minimum of two (2) years of HIM, Coding, or Case Management experience
  • Acute care CDI experience
