A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking a Controller to join its leadership team. This role combines hands-on accounting with strategic financial oversight for a growing organization of approximately $5M in annual revenue. This is a hybrid role, requiring only one day on-site per month in the Bronx.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee full-cycle accounting, including general ledger, journal entries, and month-end close
Manage government contract invoicing, reporting, and compliance
Supervise accounting and grants staff, ensuring accurate allocations and timely reporting
Prepare financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, and audit schedules
Support annual budgeting, audit preparation, and grant reporting
Maintain compliance with GAAP and federal/state funding requirements
Develop and improve accounting systems and internal controls
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
3+ years of nonprofit accounting experience with government contracts
Strong technical proficiency in Fund EZ or comparable accounting software
Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs) and experience with PASSPort a plus
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and lead a small team
Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
