We are seeking a Senior Food Scientist to lead innovation and product development efforts focused on teas, botanicals, and health & wellness ingredients. This is a cross-functional, customer-facing role that combines deep technical expertise with strategic thinking and strong project leadership. You will play a key role in formulating new products, solving complex technical challenges, and driving customers’ success through tailored solutions.

This role is based in Secaucus, NJ, with easy access to NYC.

This is a hybrid role with 4 days in office and 1 day remote.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead product formulation and development, focusing on tea, herbal, and functional ingredient-based applications across a range of food and beverage formats.
• Collaborate directly with customers and Sales teams to translate technical concepts into commercially viable product solutions; lead customer presentations, technical discussions, and formulation workshops.
• Develop and scale prototypes for both proactive innovation and targeted customer needs, demonstrating the value of Martin Bauer’s ingredient portfolio.
• Provide technical leadership in process development, scale-up, and commercialization of new and reformulated products.
• Partner with Operations to troubleshoot production issues, improve product performance, and enhance manufacturing efficiency.
• Guide junior team members and mentor less-experienced scientists on formulation, processing, and customer project execution.
• Ensure adherence to Quality Assurance and Regulatory requirements across all project stages.
• Support preparation and submission of technical documentation, regulatory filings, and product specifications.
• Maintain an organized and functional lab environment, including equipment maintenance, inventory, and sample management.
• Stay informed on market trends, functional ingredient innovations, and regulatory changes relevant to our products and customers.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, or related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 5 years of experience in food and beverage R&D, with a proven track record of leading projects from concept to commercialization.
• Hands-on experience with botanical ingredients, especially tea, herbal extracts, or nutraceuticals.
• Strong understanding of functional formulation—how to balance nutrition, taste, stability, and sensory performance.
• Demonstrated ability to work directly with customers, presenting technical solutions and managing collaborative development projects.
• Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of SAP or similar systems for formulation and material management is a plus.
• Must be organized, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
• Willingness and ability to travel for customer meetings, trials, and inter-site collaboration.

Compensation range:

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is listed, however, pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including bonus.
