From the course: AI Meets Accessibility: A Conversation with Ioana Tanase and Christina Mallon

AI, assistive technologies, and inclusive design

- When we talk about AI systems, we often refer to them as assistants, as in AI is an assistive technology. Now, historically, assistive technologies have been understood mainly as tools for people with disabilities. That was always a misconception, and as AI makes its way into our lives and our work, it's becoming more and more clear how assistive technologies benefit us all. Now, as we make this transition to life with AI, it's vital that we don't allow AI or its uses to perpetuate existing biases and harms people with disabilities' experience, and that AI doesn't become a reason to abandon work on accessible and inclusive design. To talk about this meeting point between artificial intelligence and accessibility, I had a conversation with two people who know a lot about the subject. Principal Director for Inclusive Design Christina Mallon and Inclusive AI and Accessibility Program Manager Ioana Tanase from Microsoft. Here's our conversation.
