- Years ago when I had my first job in corporate America, we went through an extensive strategic planning process, complete with a vision, mission, and values. It was the first time in my career I had ever heard of a strategic plan or a company having a clearly stated vision, mission, and values. At the time, I was head of sales for a small division of the company that was located far from our headquarters. When the strategy and vision were revealed and communicated company-wide, I did not give them much thought. I assumed that the vision, mission, and values were something that our executive leadership team would focus on, and that it didn't have much to do with me at all. Boy, was I wrong. The very next week, my supervisor called a meeting and asked that we spend the next few weeks working on creating our strategy, one that aligns with the vision, mission, and values of the overall company.
