- Okay, so I'm going to show you how to crack passwords, at least how they do it in the movies. You ready? Here we go. Shoot. Darn it. Okay, I'm in. The reality is, is that getting to your passwords isn't quite that easy, but it can be surprisingly easy if we don't take proper precautions. The big thing you need to understand about passwords is that passwords, think about your router being turned off, or your computer being turned off, or whatever you're putting passwords into being turned off. When that thing is turned off, those passwords have to be stored somewhere on its mass storage, and they are, and they're usually stored as some kind of encrypted file. Now, the encryption can be very different and the idea is we use something called a hash. A hash is a one-way value. It's not really an encryption, it's kind of like a remainder, but it's a very fixed length and it varies tremendously no matter what you put in. So, let me give you an idea of how hashes work.
