- Let's say you're accused of cheating on your expense report or being biased in your review process. Your boss doesn't just accept the accusation as true, your boss gives you the benefit of doubt. Here's the question, who gets the benefit, you or your boss? You both do. Giving the benefit of doubt means getting the benefit of doubt. It isn't about blind trust. It's about getting better evidence to inform your beliefs. From a critical thinking perspective, the goal is to get your beliefs to match up with the truth. Believing a claim without doubt prioritizes speed and efficiency over validity. The claim stands as the default without any attempt to get closer to the truth. Doubt isn't naturally comfortable. The effort to eliminate doubt drives us to the destination of belief. My friend Tim told me he had no doubt in his belief that his house would sell in one week.
