- If change and, in fact, rapid change is the new normal, then managers need new tools to help them deal with change that never stops. But we don't start that process by looking outside ourselves. First, we have to look within. Even if you've trained managers with the latest techniques, even if you've done everything you can to prepare your managers with shiny new processes for managing their teams, it won't matter if you haven't first helped managers to know their own unique skills and other attributes. That self-knowledge is where we have to start to help build adaptive managers. So if I approached you in an elevator and I asked you to describe things like your unique transferable skills, your special knowledges, your preferred people environment, and other characteristics of your work, you'd probably have a hard time.
