Consider the organizational culture when disagreeing

- Before making the call on whether to express your disagreement or not, there's one more factor to consider, culture. All of us grow up receiving messages about how deferential we should be to people in power. In some cultures, it's expected that people defer to those who have status and authority. In more egalitarian countries, it can be common for almost anyone to challenge someone more senior. Think about the culture you're from. I mean, the country and regional culture, of course, but also your family culture. Ask yourself, when you were growing up, were you expected to respect people in positions of authority or are you from a more egalitarian background? How much attention do you pay to the status of a person? Do you come from a culture where disagreements are handled more directly or where they're frowned upon?
