- Every day, leaders are called upon to make decisions that impact their teams, their organizations, and themselves. The truth is making decisions, whether easy or tough isn't optional, it's essential. Effective decision making is one of my strongest competencies, and I've learned over the years that it's more art than science. Here are a few tips that work for me, and some steps I took to make better decisions. First, create your own personal network. No one leads alone. I have what I call my personal board of advisors, which is a select group of individuals whom I deeply trust and respect. They include mentors, former executives, consultants, colleagues, and yes, even my own team members when appropriate. I lean on this group as a think tank, a reality check, and accountability partners.
