- Positive psychologists seek to understand the different between optimistic and pessimistic people. They look at what builds happiness and what builds resilience. One thing they've discovered is that resilient people, people who can overcome adversity, have a knack for creating a plan to deal with the adversity and following through on it. In fact, positive psychologists have studied all sorts of trauma from soldiers at war to victims of domestic violence, to people whose ship sank and floated in the ocean for several days. Every time, the resilient people in these scenarios had developed a plan. It saddens me to report that many of the people who call me for help don't have a plan and when I attempt to help them create one, they provide me with all the excuses in the world as to why my suggestions won't work.
