Big congratulations to our portfolio company Ephos on receiving a $49m EU Chips Act grant, the first ever awarded to a startup! 🚀 The grant will help fund a new manufacturing facility in Italy, enabling Ephos to scale production of its ultra low-loss, fast-switching photonic chips, which are a key building block of AI data centers, and quantum computers. 💻 Well done Andrea Rocchetto and all the team! 🌟
Today, Ephos becomes the first startup to be awarded an EU Chips Act grant. These grants are critical for building advanced manufacturing plants, and by receiving this funding, Ephos joins some of the world's largest chip manufacturers: TSMC, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics. The total project investment is €105M ($123M), with the EU Chips Act grant covering €41.5M ($49M), to support the construction of our second fabrication facility, named Fab-2. Fab-2 will manufacture ultra-low loss and fast-switching integrated photonic circuits on glass substrates. These chips will meet the skyrocketing needs of AI data centers, which use them for increasing the speed of data transfer and for reducing the overall energy consumption. We're building Fab-2 less than a year after Fab-1 construction finished. Yes, hardware can move really fast.
