“Welding is an art.” That’s how Franklyn Galvan, HR Staff Specialist at General Dynamics Electric Boat, described the craft when speaking during a completion ceremony for 32 welding students in the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program. With years of experience helping build the workforce behind U.S. Navy submarines, Galvan explained: “You learn how to control heat and weld distortion, read blueprints and make welds what they are. It is an art.” His remarks highlighted the precision and skill these graduates bring to the maritime defense industry.
