Farmers in Perigi village, South Sumatra, are demonstrating how restored peatlands can support food security and stronger livelihoods. Working with Sriwijaya University and CIFOR-ICRAF, the community has been rehabilitating peatland through agrosilvofishery trials. This season, they introduced corn. With timely planting, soil-moisture tracking and post-harvest support, six hectares produced around three tonnes of dehusked and shelled corn, helping farmers secure better prices and build confidence in farming without burning. Local leaders now plan to channel part of next year’s food-security budget into expanding corn planting and strengthening the agrosilvofishery model. Perigi’s experience shows how science, collaboration and community leadership can turn degraded peatland into productive, resilient landscapes.
