Collecting accurate ice shape data for code validation is vital. Our partners at Austrian Institute for Icing Sciences use laser scanning techniques to capture the shapes and enter the results into their database. Whilst Simon makes it look easy, it is years of experience that means that he can scan quickly but accurately and give us the data we need to demonstrate our icing code capabilities. Unfortunately for him, it means he has spent a lot of the past few days working at -18°C! The data gathered under the 3D-ICESIM project will be invaluable in improving the AeroTex 3D ice accretion prediction capability, helping to make aviation both safer and more sustainable. Project 3D-ICESIM has received funding from the Bundesministerium für Klimaschutz, Umwelt, Energie, Mobilität, Innovation & Technologie (BMK) as part of the Austrian Aeronautics Programme TAKE OFF via the FFG Austrian Research Promotion Agency.
