👉 Top 5 Resume/CV Screening Instant Deal-Breakers (From Y Combinator Founders Who Review 100+ Applications Daily) 👀 Jamie MacLeod and I are fortunate to receive 100s of applications daily for open engineering, product, and GTM positions at Alguna (YC S23). With limited bandwidth, we can only spend 10-15 seconds per application before deciding whether to disqualify it or move it forward for further consideration. Here are the top five deal-breakers we’ve come across and how to instantly fix them: 1️⃣ Wrong company name or placeholders left in the application (e.g. {{INSERT_COMPANY_NAME}}) This one is straightforward yet surprisingly common. Countless cover letters mistakenly refer to the wrong company, people, or industries. 2️⃣ Leaving ChatGPT footnotes when copy-pasting applications There is nothing wrong with using AI. Efficiency is one of the core Alguna values, so we love people who can hack things together, but those extra 5 seconds to review may be a make-or-break for your job application. 3️⃣ No portfolio links (or a promise to one) for design/marketing roles Action > words, seeing it in the wild > theoretical impact, substance > fluff. You can help yourself stand out among other applicants, especially if you already have one ready to go. 4️⃣ Booking a Product Demo to get feedback on your application We appreciate the hustle, but this is a big no unless you're genuinely interested in buying our solution. A thoughtful, concise, cold email highlighting relevant experience works better. At this stage, most startup founders tend to read every email. 5️⃣ Not tailoring applications for early-stage startups We’re a startup—things are imperfect, and processes are often unstructured. Lead with your most relevant experience and key accomplishments, visible within 10 seconds over 9 pages. Most of this advice primarily applies to early-stage startups and is not a guarantee of current or future success, but it could be a good starting point 😉 Have I missed anything?
