I agree with John C. Maxwell: "The Single Biggest Way to Impact an Organization is to Focus on Leadership Development" Someone said to me lately- "Why is so much of your content about leadership development?...You are confusing people about what you do...Can you focus more on Lean"? 😲 I took away the feedback to think about it. And realized a few things... A lot of people don't realize that a good Lean consultant/coach/mentor is also usually a good leadership coach. They don't always dive straight into tools, methods, and systems- but eventually, they get there. More often than not, before we ever get to the tools, the real work starts with leadership development. Why? Because Lean only works when leaders: 👉 Communicate with clarity. 👉 Build trust and accountability. 👉 Create an environment where people feel safe to raise problems. Without that foundation, the best Lean tool in the world won’t stick. A daily huddle, a visual board, or a standard work document means little if the team doesn’t feel supported by strong, respectful leadership. That’s why leadership coaching so often comes first. It gives managers and leaders the skills and mindset they need to support problem-solving, encourage continuous improvement, and involve their teams in change. In other words, leadership coaching clears the path for Lean to actually take root. I'm interested to know what you you think... Do you agree? Do you disagree? Leave your comments below 🙏
From what I've learnt from people like you, Lean isn’t just a system of tools, it’s a philosophy of behaviour! And behaviour starts at the top...
Totally agree. The most brilliant method and tools in the world won’t be much good if the person using them, promoting them, or training others to use them doesn’t have the skills to lead. There’s no sense decorating the house and installing the fancy chandelier if you forgot to pour the foundation or build the supporting walls.
The strength of Lean lies less in its tools, more in leaders who create trust. That foundation determines whether change takes hold.
If leadership is not “bought in,” nothing you offer as a consultant/coach/mentor will be accepted or accomplished. When we begin engaging with a company, we have to get leadership working with us. Often, it is the plant level that is harder to convince than the company’s senior leadership.
I find it so fascinating that most companies want to focus on the ROI of Lean in terms of increased throughput or bottom line impact, and that is very real in most cases. But I find with almost every company I guide through implementing Lean that the greatest value is in equipping and engaging the team to solve problems daily. This skill (and habit) yields returns for years, not just the next quarter. It starts with Leadership and if done right, extends to the entire organization. Great share Catherine McDonald!
Thanks, Catherine McDonald, for sharing your reflections. I'd follow Carl Klemm who reminds us that it's always about both achieving results and developing people. With that in mind, I agree 100% with your 𝑎 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡/𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ/𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑢𝑠𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑎 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝 𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ. 🙏
Strong, respectful leadership is the foundation. All the Lean tools and systems are the house you build on top of it. Without a solid foundation, the house will eventually crumble.
Catherine McDonald - I am in agreement. Developing leadership skills is fundamental to any approach or framework you choose to integrate into the workplace and its culture.
Absolutely agree, Mark. Lean isn’t just about tools or processes, it’s about the culture that enables them. Without leaders who communicate clearly, build trust, and create psychological safety, even the best Lean systems won’t succeed. Leadership development is the invisible foundation that makes continuous improvement possible. Focus on developing leaders first, and Lean
Leading people is a privilege, not a right. Serving their needs brings countless benefits and supports growth. Being on the same page requires a commitment to share openly and collaborate. Once you have rapport and a relationship is formed, trust can prosper. A team can achieve much when these fundamentals are in place.
