Why modern payment rails are crucial for treasury management.

Payments Drive Treasury Management Value The frequency of #payments not only contribute to larger deposit balances but generate the bulk of treasury management fees (below). Not investing in BOTH send and receive capabilities of modern payment rails such as #RTP and #FedNow , sends a signal that you don't value #treasurymanagement and your future strategy is to not be competitive with the commercial customer. Worse than that, you will forgo the option of having a viable alternative to replace costly checks and wires. Treasury management is perhaps the single most profitable and engaging product bundle that banks have. A small investment now in payments will save the bank from having to purchase expensive deposits in the future and give you the cost structure your bank needs to remain competitive. Without modern payment capabilities, it is a question of when you will sell the bank and at what price - it is not a question of if. I get these are more “modern” rails but doesn’t same-day ACH do the job? I guess it’s not “real-time” but with 3 daily settlements I’ll get it within a couple hours or at worst by the end of the business day and using a service banks and customers are already familiar with for years.

This is such an important message for every bank Chris Nichols, treasury management is not a “nice to have” it’s a “need to have.” And I still see many banks investing mostly on the commercial lending side and far less into treasury management capabilities, and then they wonder why deposits from commercial aren’t stronger. Make treasury management a top priority and it will help any bank to not only survive, but to thrive in the years ahead.

What is your thoughts on the future of payment rails as it relates to stablecoin? Payment tech is evolving quickly… as we fully incorporate RTP and FedNow the next best payment system comes out and we are behind again.

Great analysis Chris, keep up the good work.
