We get asked a lot of questions about living underwater. One question in particular keeps coming up. "How does a toilet work underwater?" In recognition of World Toilet Day yesterday, here's how number ones and number twos will work for the crew on Vanguard, DEEP's pilot subsea human habitat. #DEEP #WorldToiletDay #Vanguard

When sitting on the toilet in a ship or rig based saturation complex one thinks a lot about Delta T. The pressure differential between inside the chamber and outside. This Delta T number can be quite substantial. Example: if you are living st a Saturation depth 400 feet or 121.92 meters = a delta T of 163.3 PSI Math to get delta T 400 FSW x .445 psi per ft= 178 PSI Pressure Outside the chamber 14.7 psi 178 psi - 14.7 psi =163.3 PSI To flush the toilet takes 2 people, the pooper and the surface tender. Never flush the toilet while sitting on the seat as your bowls will end up being exposed to the Delta T and you will be sucked into the toilet and out through the piping. A saturation divers worst nightmare.

The question, "How does a toilet work underwater?" and the answer from a former saturation diver of many years, me, "Carefully" after the salutary lesson leant by a Comex sat rat back in the day who had his bowls sucked out when he wasn't careful, but he did survive, which was good....... 😎

”KEEP BACK 1000 FEET” I love the humor 🤣
