What happens when cultural progress doesn’t keep pace with policy? 💡 That question has been on my mind a lot lately. "At their core, equity efforts are about removing barriers that have long held Black communities back, not about giving handouts or lowering standards. The goal is to ensure everyone has a fair chance to succeed, free from the weight of discrimination. By twisting the meaning of ‘DEI,’ the administration is fueling distrust and division and rolling back hard-won progress for Black communities.” ⬆️ That excerpt from the report says it perfectly. It’s been frightening to watch this all unfold. And I’m grateful that organizations like Onyx Impact, along with a few others, are tracking it closely. What I keep thinking about is the role of culture in all of this — how easily the Trump administration has tapped into a deeply held belief that Black and brown people are somehow inherently inadequate or incapable of progress on their own. And it’s not just the MAGA faithful embracing this narrative. It’s the “regular” people too — your kind high school friend or that former coworker — parading down your facebook timeline talking about the virtues of “meritocracy.” It’s sobering to realize how decades of progress can be unraveled by one person in power exploiting that quiet, pervasive disdain for Black achievement and resilience. Because it’s rarely loud. Most of the time, it’s subtle, woven into every nuance of our culture, even within the Black community itself. And to be clear this method is being used to dismantle rights and programs not only for Black people but for Brown people, women, LGBTQIA communities, and people with disabilities. I keep wondering what progress might look like if we invested as much in cultural change as we do in policy. Cultural change that isn’t performative. That demands we confront and begin to heal the poisonous beliefs that have permeated America — and much of the world, through colonialism for generations. After ten years working in communications around policy and politics, one thing feels clear to me: Progress won’t stick unless cultural and policy work move hand in hand.
"They’re using DEI as a smokescreen — and it’s costing Black communities millions.” Esosa Osa breaks down how over $100 million in critical funding — from flood prevention to asthma and rare disease research — has been slashed under the guise of “anti-DEI” rhetoric. 💡 The receipts don’t lie. It’s more political framing than factual analysis, really. Minister Bowen’s post simplifies a complex issue. Surveys from ABARES and the National Farmers’ Federation show that while some farmers welcome renewables for lease income, others are frustrated by land-use conflicts, biodiversity offsets, and transmission easements slicing through productive properties. These are not ideological concerns; they’re economic and practical ones. Farmers understand change, but they also value sovereignty over their land and long-term productivity. They’re right to question whether large-scale transmission projects and imported solar hardware deliver genuine regional benefit. Energy transition should never come at the expense of food security or local control. Fusion energy offers a better path: compact, waste-free, water-efficient power that can operate beside irrigation hubs and manufacturing precincts without consuming farmland. It’s already being commercialised by Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Helion Energy, and Australia could join that industrial race now legally, under the EPBC Act, without reopening the nuclear ban debate. If the goal is to empower regional Australia, then policy should look beyond short-term subsidies and towards sovereign, stable, and continuous clean generation that truly partners with the landholders who feed the nation. #FusionEnergyAustralia #AUKUS #DefenceInnovation #EnergySovereignty #SovereignDefenceIndustry #GridTransformation #Farmers #Landholders #RegionalAustralia #FoodSecurity #CityofMoretonBay #AustralianParliament #Auspol #EnergyPolicy #Infrastructure #ClimateAction #NetZero #ClimateResilience #EnergyTransition #CSIRO #ANSTO #AustralianManufacturing #NuclearforAustralia #CleanEnergyCouncil #SmartEnergyCouncil #ChrisBowen #TerryYoung #MurrayWatt #SussanLey #DavidLittleproud #BarnabyJoyce #AnthonyAlbanese #AndrewHastie #DanTehan #TedObrien #AustralianLaborParty #LiberalPartyofAustralia #Nationals #AustralianNews #MediaAustralia #ABC #SBS #TheGuardianAus #SMH #LiberalsAgainst #GilbertBoffa #AustralianConservationFoundation #SarahHansonYoung #MatthewCanavan #JaneHume

They call them "escapes." We call it what it is: a systemic failure. When 75,000 farmed salmon broke free from Mowi's Loch Linnhe site during Storm Amy, it was framed as an "escape" – as if the fish chose to leave, not that the company failed to contain them. There have been hundreds of ‘escape’ incidents from Scottish salmon farms in the past 30 years. This isn’t an isolated story of bad luck in a big storm. It is part of a pattern, recorded in the Scottish Government’s own data. In our latest blog, we share new analysis that shows just how serious the problem has become, and explore what needs to be done about it.
