Not every species can handle the soaked, acidic soils of peatlands. But pioneer trees like Macaranga are built for it. This pioneer species, known locally as Mahang, is often the first to return after disturbance. It grows fast and helps cool the ground, and makes it easier for other species to grow. At the Sumatra Merang Peatland Project, we track several Macaranga species through vegetation surveys. Their seedlings play an important role in helping the forest recover, step by step.
