Fred Smith dared to dream big, and the result was FedEx — a company that revolutionized freight transport and changed the way the world moves goods. Starting with a fleet of just 14 small jets, his vision grew into a global powerhouse. GE Aerospace is proud to have powered his journey from the very beginning, starting with a handshake deal that launched FedEx’s fleet of modified business jets. Today, FedEx operates 269 cargo aircraft powered by GE Aerospace engines, including the CF6 and GE90. Smith’s legacy reminds us of the power of innovation, partnership, and perseverance. Fun fact: When FedEx was at the brink of bankruptcy and couldn't secure a loan in time to keep them solvent, Fred Smith used up his last of his money and bet it all on a game of blackjack. FedEx wouldn't exist at all if he hadn't.

Back in 1988, I remember when Fred Smith publicly recognized my mother at a company event/gathering after she had won a “Bravo Zulu” award. At the time, she was a courier in our home town of Columbia, MO (back in the days of the old logo, which was changed around 1994-ish). I never forgot that interaction. His leadership was truly far-reaching.
