🏟️ Beaver Stadium Shows Team Spirit for Sustainability During the 2024 Penn State football season, GOAL Member Penn State University Athletics piloted a simple but powerful pom-pom shaker reuse program — and the results are worth cheering for. 🎉 📣 23,757 shakers were repurposed throughout the season, diverting nearly 950 lbs of plastic — the weight of 850 footballs — from the landfill. ♻️ Of those collected: ✔️ 70% were reused at later games ✔️ 30% were recycled into composite decking via the CCRRA and TREX 💡 That single change helped avoid nearly 3,000 lbs of CO₂ emissions — and with a projected 35% increase in recovery next season, PSU is on track to divert even more. 🎖️ This initiative qualifies for a GOAL Bronze Medal under the “Create a Reuse Program or Activation” objective — and with continued success, Beaver Stadium is poised to earn Silver. 👉 Imagine the impact if more venues took a second look at what’s already in their waste stream. What could you repurpose, reuse, or divert? How many “shakers” are hiding in plain sight at your venue? 👏 This program was made possible through a collaborative effort between Penn State Sustainability, the Penn State Athletics team, and campus leadership — with special recognition to student interns Michael Spinelli and Ashley Currey for their dedication, and to Ayodeji Oluwalana, TRUE Advisor (Waste Reduction & Recycling Program Manager) for championing the initiative. #GOALMemberHighlight #GOALMedals #Sustainability #GOALNetwork #WasteDiversion #CollegeFootball #ReusePrograms #CircularEconomy #SportsSustainability #PSU #BeaverStadium #GOALMember
