It reflects the collective momentum of a maritime industry that is moving forward — clear-eyed, methodically, and with a shared ambition: reducing its environmental impact while remaining a key economic pillar in Europe.
The day, opened by a video message from European Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, showed how much the maritime transition relies on coordinated action across the ecosystem: industry, ports, EU institutions, scientists, and NGOs.
A few voices captured this perfectly:
👉 Christophe Clergeau, Member of the European Parliament:
“The role of Green Marine Europe and all project and innovation leaders is to raise awareness among economic actors that there is indeed a pathway [towards environmental transition] — and to help them seize it.”
👉 Mathieu Bergé, President of Aquitania Ports Link:
“I discovered Green Marine Europe and its ambition to develop this certification to improve maritime transport conditions in Europe. I saw in it an opportunity to engage the ports of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.”
The wrap-up video captures this collective mobilisation:
• an industry increasingly aware of its role in protecting biodiversity,
• a strengthened dialogue with NGOs and the scientific community,
• a broader environmental vision in which ports become essential actors,
• and a clear milestone ahead: opening the GME framework to ports in 2026.
👉 Maritime transition doesn’t just happen. It is built - together.
And this video is a concrete reflection of that.

I would like to thank you for coming together to exchange ideas, share experiences and work as one community to shape the future of green shipping. Ship traffic between EU ports alone is responsible for three to 4% of U's total CO2 emissions, so without walled actions, those numbers will only rise. That is why the European Union has already put in place one of the world's most ambitious frameworks for the decarbonization of shipping, the Fuel EU Maritime Regulation. The Emissions Trading System and the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation, creating the bunkering and onshore power supply that ships need in European ports. I would also like to highlight two more initiatives, Circles of Life and Echo Shipyard. Both are excellent examples of how we can reduce the environmental footprint of shipyards while creating sustainable strategies for the future. The circle of life project is focused on developing the tools to enhance circularity and lower environmental emissions of the shipbuilding process so on one hand we have the shipyard environmental performance index let's focus on the building process of the ship and the way to assess these impact the material passport is focused on what is the impact of the materials used in the ship and how can you assess the impact of that try to reuse what is already in CSD. We reuse the indicators for assessing the shipyard impacts. What ship owner should know that is not just a way to measure environmental impact. So you start with knowing what is your impact and you can build from that to lowering that impact. And hopefully we will end up with ships being built with the lowest environmental impact and the highest circularity. Vehicle shipyards research innovation action that's added in 2024. Our goal and aim is to promote sustainability in the shipping sector to create a set of tools suitable for shipyards that they will be able using these tools to monitor the high backed processes. From the scientific work performing within the project and the results that we will cooperate into the tools created by the project, we will be able to produce accommodations for this maritime. Doctor and the European Commission and the European.
