Military-connected students make up around 5% of undergraduates—but many campuses are still playing catch-up in meeting their needs. A new research brief from the Center for Higher Education Policy and Practice (CHEPP) outlines a roadmap for how institutions can better support these learners, many of whom are navigating deployments, relocations, and the transition to civilian life while pursuing their education. Some of the most actionable strategies include: • Streamlining credit for military training and experience • Offering Green Zone Ally Training to build cultural competency • Creating peer mentorship and affinity groups to foster belonging • Ensuring flexibility in course formats and scheduling Perhaps most critically: career coaching that translates service into civilian success—an area that too often goes underserved.
