My journey into Web3 started in 2021 through NFTs. Back then, crypto was still seen as a niche industry that was viewed with a lot of scepticism, which was understandable given everyone was speculating on tokens with pictures. While this was fun, Web3 felt like it had a lot of untapped potential. Since then, the industry has grown so much. Governments are adopting favourable legislation and policies. Corporations are adopting digital asset-based treasury strategies and there are a plethora of ETFs involving not only Bitcoin, but other altcoins as well. Concrete consumer use cases, like stablecoins for payments, @Moca Network’s AIR Kit for digital identity, @anichess bridging Web2 gaming with Web3 gaming and @opencampus democratising access to education and student loans are becoming abundant. A lot has been accomplished, but there is still so much more to do, particularly on the legal and regulatory front. To this end, I am happy to be re-appointed as a member of the Subcommittee on Regulatory Matters under the Hong Kong’s Task Force on Promoting Web3 Development. With the recent publication of Policy Statement 2.0 on the Development of Digital Assets, the Hong Kong Government set a clear vision for digital assets and I am excited to play a part in helping Hong Kong realise the promise of Web3, blockchain technology and digital property rights.
