𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 ❓ People always ask how a Geography major ends up spending 10 years in agriculture. My go-to reply use to be, 'I just fell into it.' But after a decade in the field, I realize it was more of an evolution. 💡 𝐌𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭-𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐛-𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 came in 2017, in Wasco, CA. I was working as photographer, videographer, and cartographer for a groundwater recharge project* where the basin was also used to grow rice and host migrating White Pelicans. This project was my introduction to agroecology and fundamentally changed how I thought about farming and agtech. 💧 Over the last eight years, I've learned on the job how to successfully run field trials, compile and analyze complex data, and turn it into a compelling user story for clients. For example, while working for an agtech startup, I partnered with Idaho irrigation districts on a water conservation grant. Detecting Early Signs of Change in Canadian Forests Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has just released its summary information on Tesera Systems project "Automated Multivariate Change Detection for Rapid Forest Monitoring". The project created a platform that quickly identifies disturbances in the land, changes in moisture levels, shifts in vegetation cover, and overall changes in forest health. Automated processing improves the accuracy and consistency of analyzing large amounts of data. Additionally, automated monitoring is more cost-effective over time compared with traditional manual methods. This system can integrate various data sources, including satellite images, and can be customized to meet specific forest health monitoring needs.
