With confusion around the looming under 16 social media ban, we spoke to the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, the man whose wife inspired him to create the framework for the ban. He says that when it comes in in just over 2 weeks time, it will come with some issues, and that social media platforms themselves, who are responsible for removing all underage accounts, will be more than happy to promote any controversy around it's implementation. But he says, despite the noise it will create come December 10, the benefits for children will far outweigh the costs, even if every kid in Australia under 16 hates him for it. He's just happy they can't vote at the next state election. But let me guarantee you something Things are gonna go wrong. There will be controversies, and there will be a massive elevation in the public discourse of every last instance of something not be handled appropriately. You are gonna hear lots of stories in the media about how this is a. Catastrophic failure of process and rollout. And the reason why I know that is true one is because whenever you have a reform like this, there are problems and they get elevated, but also to social media platforms have an extraordinarily large and material interest in this not going well. And of course, they are probably the most significant player at the table to determine how the rollout goes. They have a material interest in it not going well, because if it does go well or too smoothly, then of course it becomes all too easy for every other jurisdiction around the world to adopt and we know that there is a lot of global interest. So brace yourselves. Buckle up. You're going to hear lots of noise about this, and lots of complaints and lots of kids. Umm. Finding their grievances being elevated in the media, but none of it, in my view, will outweigh the net benefit to implementing this reform.
