💡Can We Cool a Chiller Condenser Without a Cooling Tower? Yes but with limitations. As per ASHRAE Handbook HVAC systems and Equipment Chapter 14 condenser water system, some systems, called “Once-Through City Water Systems,” use city potable water to cool the condenser directly, then discharge it to the sewer. While this can eliminate the need for a cooling tower, it’s generally not allowed due to water conservation laws and ASHRAE Standard 189.1 restrictions. Still, in critical applications like data centers, research labs, or life-support equipment local authorities may permit it as a backup or emergency solution, with a strict flow limit (typically under 3.5 mL/s per kW of cooling). Alternatives like well water or lake/river water systems can also serve as condenser cooling sources, but they require filtration, corrosion control, and environmental permits to avoid fouling and protect aquatic life. System Features & Design Notes:- • The return piping is kept higher than the condenser to ensure it remains full of water. • Control valves regulate flow based on condenser head pressure maintaining stable condensing temperature and shutting off when the compressor stops. • Always include backflow preventers and air-gap drains for safety and compliance. • If multiple condensers share the circuit, each requires an individual control valve. ⚙️ Materials:- • Nonferrous piping is recommended typically copper or high-pressure plastic (PVC/CPVC) since corrosion inhibitors can’t be used. • Scaling may occur on hot condenser surfaces when water has high calcium content; use mechanically cleanable straight tubes to simplify maintenance. • Typical flow velocities range from 1.5–3 m/s, per ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals. • No pump is needed since city pressure drives the flow. 💧 Alternative Water Sources:- • Well water can be used instead of city water, but often causes calcium scaling. • Lake or river water systems are another option they remove the need for a cooling tower but require filtration, environmental permits, and careful intake design to avoid pulling in sediment or aquatic life. Australia’s fluctuating climate pushes critical water systems to their limits. Hot, dry conditions exacerbate water scarcity, and the accompanying harsh UV degrades water transport and storage assets, causing them to crack and leak. Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites are already widely used in water and wastewater networks as an alternative to traditional materials. These composites are immune to corrosion and can better withstand extreme temperatures and harsh conditions – they're also inherently lightweight and can be easily transported and installed in remote or disaster affected areas. However, despite it's long design life, maintaining these assets poses unique challenges as internal defects are often hard to detect. Traditional assessment techniques rely on visual inspection, which is time-consuming, provides limited insight and requires the asset to taken offline. We caught up with the FRP experts at RPC Technologies Pty Ltd who unveiled how sophisticated ultrasonic technology can be used to perform in-service condition assessments of FRP assets, and help utilities shift to a more proactive maintenance strategy. Seagahan WTW £4.3m treatability improvements project to upgrade existing water treatment processes and fully modernise and enhance operational efficiency Seagahan Water Treatment Works is located approximately six miles south of Armagh in Northern Ireland and serves communities in Edanveys, Corran, and Roughfort via a single gravity-fed main from the Seagahan impounding reservoir. The Seagahan Treatability Improvements Project is a strategic initiative within the Water Non-Infrastructure work stream, designed to address persistent operational and compliance challenges at NI Water’s 23 water treatment works. Seagahan WTW currently treats an average of 10 million litres per day (MLD), with a design capacity of 16.3 MLD and plays a critical role in regional water supply. In recent times Seagahan WTW has faced ongoing issues including: ♦️ Elevated trihalomethanes (THMs) and turbidity in final water. ♦️ Inadequate contact time for disinfection. ♦️ A failing soda ash system. ♦️ Chlorinated backwash water and backwash capacity issues. Unaddressed, these deficiencies could pose risks to regulatory compliance, limit future growth capacity, and increase the potential for Cryptosporidium contamination. The Seagahan WTW Treatability Improvements Project has implemented a series of targeted upgrades to enhance water quality, improve operational resilience and maintain compliance. Key interventions included: 🔹 Replacement of the soda ash plant. 🔹 Installation of automatic coagulation dosing system to analyse trends. 🔹 New orthophosphoric dosing system. 🔹 Replacement of valves and actuators. 🔹 Upgrade of one rapid gravity filter with glass media. These upgrades are informed by a treatability appraisal conducted by Arup, which identified critical shortfalls and recommended improvements to ensure the facility could meet current and future regulatory standards. The project has enhanced operational efficiency, enabled real-time monitoring via advanced SCADA telemetry, and future-proofed the system for further instrumentation upgrades. Collaboration between the client, project manager, contractor and other key stakeholders was central to the execution of the project and its overall success.
