This concept is making me break my multi-year streak of only posting positive thoughts on LinkedIn. Where to begin....1) Their press release claims that "the sensors increase the accuracy of the retardant drops." By finding what? For those who are not familiar with how aerial suppression works: you don't drop retardant ON the fire. Retardant is used to reinforce a planned or existing control line, or placed in a manner that will best slow the advance of the fire (like a ridgeline). The purpose of retardant is NOT to put fires out - it is to "retard" their spread. It buys time for ground personnel to cut an effective line by removing a strip of fuel. The location for a retardant drop is determined in consultation with the incident commander and based upon where that commander wants it to support their tactical objectives on the ground. And it is usually very, very easy to find - because it is a road, or bulldozer line, or as mentioned previously, a ridgeline (the terrain of which adds to the effectiveness).
