Patrizia Bertini’s Post

Today, as the European Accessibility Act becomes law, I find myself pausing to reflect. In 2003, I wrote the first Italian book on accessibility, fuelled by a belief that technology should serve everyone. In 2004, I was a young researcher in Hungary, standing before ministers and asking whether Europe could truly call itself inclusive while excluding millions from the digital world. That same year, I drove and contributed to launching Italy’s first accessible web banking service with WeBank, a project that showed me accessibility was not just an ethical obligation, but an innovation catalyst. I had the honour of working on the European Internet Accessibility Observatory (EIAO) with extraordinary colleagues, and I continue supporting the European Commission as an evaluator and expert since. Back then, accessibility felt like an academic plea – necessary, but idealistic. Yet here we are. What was once theory is now law. What was once charity is now strategy. What was once voluntary is now vital. The EAA is a milestone, but not the destination. The real work begins now: choosing whether we build systems that expand human potential, or ones that quietly keep people out. Patrizia thank you for reminding me of that incredible 2003, when we were pioneers together in the field of accessibility. It was the beginning of an incredible journey for those practices that have finally become law

Ciao Pat, un viaggio di oltre 20 anni… alzo un calice a Te per averlo iniziato e compiuto, e ti abbraccio 🥂❤️

Thank you for your thoughts, I enjoyed working with you and the others on the EIAO project - even though it was quite a challenge at times! Glad you are continuing the work.

👏 exactly right and great to hear you’re advising on it actively. I think too often we’re approaching this topic from the wrong angle anyways - ignoring that it’s simply good business sense too! Especially with an ever increasing older population of internet users/consumers trying to use digital interfaces - simple things like font size/contrast/spacing make the difference between using or not using your products. So rather than seeing regulations and guidelines as limiting factors - there’s real value in flipping your perspective, and seeing accessibility as a competitive advantage.
