First Building - Bradfield City Centre is greatly deserving of the 2025 Good Design Award for Sustainability. This state-of-the-art facility is a catalyst for sustainable growth. It's Stage 1 of Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF), a project that anchors Western Sydney’s emerging Aerotropolis. Good design principles have been cleverly used throughout to unite regenerative design, cultural storytelling, and innovation. First Building was designed by Hassell in collaboration with cultural research agency Djinjama. The project was commissioned by the Bradfield Development Authority (BDA) and NSW Public Works. On 14 October, over 300 built environment professionals will take over the London Eye to call on the government to support a circular economy in construction. The Circular Revolution, led by UK Architects Declare, is bringing together industry leaders to demonstrate that our sector is ready to lead the transition to a circular economy – and to make clear what we need from policymakers to make it happen. Over 70% of global CO₂ emissions come from urban centers: expansion, land consumption, transport networks, energy, and existing and newly constructed buildings. Decarbonization is not only a multi-scale issue that deeply involves both the territorial and architectural scales: it means rethinking how we live, move, and produce energy. More compact, green, and efficient cities can become drivers of transition, reducing emissions and improving quality of life. Urban design thus becomes a tool for integrating technological, environmental, and social solutions. Hosted by Place North West, the event brought together a diverse mix of voices—from architects and civil engineers to developers and landscape designers—all united by a shared mission: turning climate ambition into practical action. Key takeaways: 🔹 Nature-led design and biodiversity are no longer optional—they’re essential. 🔹People Focussed - with people being at the centre we need to ensure they are able to utilise the technologies we design and construct. 🔹 Passivhaus and modular construction are gaining traction as viable solutions for low-carbon living. 🔹 Case studies like the Climate Innovation District in Leeds and Mayfield Park in Manchester show what’s possible when sustainability is embedded from the start. 🔹 Collaboration across disciplines is the key to unlocking resilient, people-first places. It was inspiring to hear from speakers like Jonathan Wilson (Citu), Linda Thiel (White Arkitekter), and Matthew Warner (Layer.studio)—each offering grounded insights and bold visions for the future.
