Winning the Projects $2 mil - $5 mil category at our 2024 Excellence Awards, this Project is a standout example of what's possible when technical excellence, innovation and collaboration converge in urban water management.
What started as a degraded drain has been transformed into a self-sustaining natural waterway, improving biodiversity, stormwater quality and community resilience.
Key innovations include:
• Advanced stormwater modelling tailored for Townsville’s harsh climate and soil conditions
• Nature-based design featuring ponds and meandering creeks to filter runoff before it reaches the Great Barrier Reef
• Circular economy in action: weeds, dredge spoil, coffee and food waste repurposed into soil amendments, with no synthetic fertilisers used!
• Living Bags® developed with First Nations Reef Assist Partners, now recognised by the IECA for leadership in erosion control
• Collaborative contract management supporting local contractors, building skills, and delivering cost savings
This project shows how regenerative ecological restoration, informed by First Nations knowledge and circular economy principles, can create sustainable, scalable solutions for urban water and land management.
A true benchmark for future city-scale environmental projects.
