🍂🧡 This year, the Patel family is giving thanks for what matters most!
While orthopedic surgeon Ashvin Patel, MD, knew Sarasota Memorial’s stroke team was among the best, he didn’t fully understand just how life-changing their care could be until his mother suffered a stroke while he was out of the country. Thanks to rapid treatment and expert intervention, she’s back to living life fully — and the family is celebrating this season with extra gratitude — for her recovery, for their health, and for one another.
Happy Thanksgiving from #TeamSMH — and most of all, thank you for trusting us to care for you and your loved ones!
I woke up, I went to the bathroom and then I told her, don't you want to wake up? You're getting late, you know, because we go out for a walk in the morning. And she was just mumbling. So I checked her arms and leg and and they were completely left side was paralyzed. So immediately then I called the ambulance and I even called my son who was in Sicily and he said just go that way. Yeah. When she arrived there, they did all the usual stroke alert protocols that standard at our hospital here. And it was remarkable. I mean, within half an hour she had her CAT scan and within half an hour she had the interventional neurologist, Dr. Alma Louie was there evaluating her and he called me. From Sarah Solomon Hospital to Italy on my phone and said that, hey, I think your mom's had a stroke and we don't know exactly when the stroke occurred, so we can't give her a thrombolytic agent. So we're going to do a thrombectomy. What we do is we use a catheter, which means a small tube. We take these cats that are usually either from the blood vessel and the rest or in the groin, and we navigate all the way up to the brain. We're able to open the blockage. And restore the normal blood flow to the brain. He removed the crowd, all three of them. It's like a miracle that as soon as you remove that, she started a movement on the paralyzed arm and leg. Everything went so smoothly. And we couldn't believe that, you know, it could happen like that. You know that complete paralysis, no switch. And suddenly, like, you turn on the button and everything becomes all right. And like that, the recovery does not end with the. You trace when you do the procedure. Also you want to make sure they get rehab. The functional recovery improved mode in rehab. Now I'm looking forward to seeing her and see where we are at this point. Well, she's doing great. I try to visit her weekly and she has no deficits whatsoever. She as far as I can see there's been no difference before and after given the intervention. I haven't been good. Now I am doing cooking. We are going burning in working. We are going in gym every day. Well, I can say is. Thank you to everyone, and I hope that other people recognize how important it is to get your loved one to the hospital as soon as possible because we have an outstanding team that can make a dramatic difference in your family member's life.
Such a good MD
