Ever wondered what making the transition from #journalism to B2B #publicrelations is like? Well, I wrote a blog post all about it -- and why, if you don't already have a former reporter on your #PR team, you should consider the valuable skills they bring to the table. Now on the Zer0 to 5ive blog!
Journalists know how to spot the story and tell it in a way that captures attention. That’s exactly why so many thrive in PR. Our latest blog explores the strengths former journalists bring to agencies -- directly from the perspective of one of our media relations pros who spent the first part of her career reporting from the frontlines. Successful PR pros understand the importance of providing clear data and expert sources when making their pitch. 66% of journalists surveyed in Cision's Global State of the Media Report said PR professionals make it easier when they provide precise data and expert sources in their pitches. Not only should you have something or someone to support your pitch, but you must be able to provide journalists with what they need at a moment's notice. It's extraordinarily frustrating for journalists when someone offers an expert source on breaking news only to discover that the individual won't be available to speak for several days. If you offer a source for comment on a time-sensitive piece, check with the source first to ensure they'll be readily available to speak with the media.

Media Relations Tip of the Day: Ask, “What’s your deadline?” I recently wrote about the importance of responding quickly to media inquiries. Props to Gregg Laskoski for the nudge on another must-do: confirm the reporter’s deadline up front. Back in the day, there were a couple of times when I would respond to a reporter days later and miss getting my client included - a lesson learned. It’s easy - this simple question makes a big difference.#mediarelations #mediaoutreach #mediacoverage #PRtips #publicrelations

You’re pitching, posting, promoting...and somehow, still invisible. It’s not that journalists hate you. It’s that your PR game is quietly sabotaging you. Here are the five mistakes killing your coverage before it even starts: 1️⃣ Spray + Pray Pitching. If you’re sending one pitch to 50 journalists, you’re not doing PR...you’re doing spam. Personalize or perish. 2️⃣ Boring Subject Lines. “Exciting Announcement” is code for delete me. Your subject line should read like a headline, not a calendar reminder. 3️⃣ Last-Minute Launches. Journalists plan weeks (sometimes months) in advance. If you’re pitching on launch day, you’re already late. 4️⃣ No Clear Story Angle. “We exist” isn’t news. “Here’s how we’re changing X industry right now” is. 5️⃣ Ghosting Relationships. You can’t expect coverage from people you only email when you want something. Relationships = relevance. PR isn’t about being everywhere...it’s about being intentional everywhere. One tight pitch to the right journalist beats 100 sloppy ones to everyone else. Don’t end the year wondering why your inbox is empty. Fix these now, and your Q1 coverage writes itself. ♻️ Save this before you make another PR misstep. ✚ Follow Bryce North for raw, ROI-driven advice that turns “no replies” into headlines.
