Community has become the ultimate marketing buzzword... but what does it actually mean? 🤔 This week on Kindred Campfire, Anna Anderson sits down with George Taktak, founder of How Mental, to unpack the difference between real community and the "join our movement" messages we see everywhere. From social media algorithms that prioritise profit over connection, to why feeling truly seen matters more than follower counts, this conversation goes deep into what authentic community actually looks like. So how do we move beyond surface level connections to build something real? George's thoughts on why we need to feel seen, what social media companies are really after, and how true community creates the kind of power that corporations don't want us to have. To My Fellow Radio Professionals I know many of you are hurting right now. Some of the most talented, dedicated people in our business are losing their jobs—not because of a lack of passion, skill, or connection with your audience—but because of decisions made far above us, by companies that have lost sight of what makes radio truly valuable. Warren Buffett invests in things that last—things with real, intrinsic value. That’s you. Every time you crack the mic, you bring more than music or headlines. You bring presence. Comfort. Energy. You become part of someone’s morning commute, their late-night drive, or that quiet moment in the kitchen while dinner is cooking. You’re woven into people’s lives in ways most industries can’t even dream of. That’s not hype. That’s trust. That’s staying power. The truth is, radio has always been built on trust—not one viral moment, but countless small ones. A familiar laugh. A thoughtful word. A song played at just the right time. Those moments can’t be replaced by an algorithm or recreated by a corporate strategy deck. Even if some in the boardroom can’t see it, what you’ve built is real and lasting. Audiences will remember you. They’ll remember the way you made them feel, and that’s something no downsizing or corporate rebrand can erase. So to those whose chapters are ending in this industry—your work mattered. It still matters. And whether you stay in radio or move on to something new, the ability to connect, to engage, and to truly be present is a rare gift. You have it. Companies may come and go, but the heart of radio has always been people like you. And that will never be obsolete.

It’s easy to assume the most famous celebrity will bring the most attention to your campaign. But Nez Sevim Lawrence offers up a different take: sometimes that kind of attention can do more harm than good. Nez has worked on cause-led campaigns with public figures like Judi Dench and Jane Goodall, and she’s incredibly intentional about who she partners with. In our conversation, she shares how she evaluates whether a celebrity is actually a good fit and not just for press, but for the mission itself. We also talk about what happens behind the scenes once someone signs on, why some PR efforts backfire, and the red flags to watch out for when you’re building a campaign around a public figure. 🎧 New episode of Digital PR Explained is out now.
