We at Sojourner House are heartbroken by the tragic death of Kylee Monteiro. Our thoughts are with her siblings and all those who loved her. They are undoubtedly struggling to process this senseless violence and the bright future they imagined for Kylee. Kylee’s story is a painful reminder of the devastating impact that domestic violence has on the lives of young people in our community. For the advocates in our Transitional Aged Youth Program– a program that provides victims of abuse between the ages of 18 to 24 with access to crisis housing, rapid-rehousing, and specialized care– her loss serves as a reminder that the work they do is vital, urgent, and life-saving. In Sojourner House’s most recent fiscal year (7/1/24-6/30/25), 60% of the clients in our shelter and housing programs were under the age of 24. 14% of those clients were transitional aged youth, just like Kylee. Most of the time, these young people seek us out because they lack the resources and financial stability needed to break free from abuse on their own. In the midst of our grief, we're trying to find strength in the continuation of this work and in our collective commitment to ending violence and creating safer, healthier communities for everyone. We encourage anyone feeling unsafe at home or in their relationship to reach out for support. Our 24/7 helpline is 401-765-3232.

No emoji on LI are appropriate. Deeply saddened by this horrific tragedy. Thank you for lifting it up so others can know and direct grief and rage into advocacy.
