University Hospitals’ Post

Every year during his visits to UH entities, UH CEO Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, takes a moment to shine a spotlight on one extraordinary caregiver — someone whose dedication, innovation and compassion truly embody the spirit of University Hospitals. During a recent visit to UH Cleveland Medical Center, Dr. Megerian presented the Bravo Award to someone who has not only stepped up but blazed a trail: Rebecca Lee Powell, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Obstetrics. Obstetrics is a new frontier in clinical pharmacy — and it exists at UH Cleveland Medical Center because Rebecca saw a gap in care and took action. With no formal residency programs, no robust literature and few established guidelines, most pharmacists would have hesitated. Rebecca leaned in. She immersed herself in the scarce resources available, mastered the complexities of medication use in pregnancy and transitioned from staff pharmacist to a pioneering specialist. In doing so, she didn’t just fill a role — she created one. Rebecca has built a pharmacy presence in obstetrics from the ground up. She’s updated order sets, refined medication guidelines and optimized workflows to prevent delays — all while navigating the intricacies of Epic. When Epic went live, she was the one who spotted the breaks, fixed the issues and ensured patients received the right medications, safely and swiftly. Her colleagues describe her as a constant, reliable presence — answering secure messages at any hour, educating staff on rare cases and mentoring students and residents across multiple institutions. In a field with no formal training path, Rebecca has become the guidepost. Rebecca’s vision, grit and unwavering commitment have transformed care for our obstetric patients. She has elevated her team, empowered her colleagues and made UH a safer, smarter place for mothers and babies alike. She is a true Shining Star. #UHProud #CaregiverSpotlight #BravoAward #UHShiningStar #Pharmacy #PharmacySpecialist #ClinicalPharmacy #ServiceExcellence
