Collaboration sparked U.S. innovation when Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville leadership and research staff representing the Advanced Manufacturing for Affordable Building Construction Convergent Research Initiative (CRI) toured the Clayton Appalachia plant in Andersonville recently to explore opportunities to partner with the nation’s largest builder of modern, manufactured and modular homes. The Affordable Building Construction Initiative is the fifth CRI from the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute and focuses on enhancing productivity, affordability, quality and safety in building construction through the co-development of high-performance building materials and AI-enabled robotics and automation. The CRI leadership team includes cross-collaboration from two research areas within ORNL, building technologies and manufacturing science, and the support of two U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national user facilities – the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center and the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. University of Tennessee leadership support includes professors from the Tickle College of Engineering and the College of Architecture. The visit helped researchers better understand Clayton’s manufacturing process and strategize on potential collaborations under the Affordable Building Construction Convergent Research Initiative.
