It’s #DiabetesAwarenessMonth let’s talk about fasting and insulin use before surgery. Fasting before surgery is required and generally safe, even for patients with diabetes. Fasting and insulin can sometimes lower a patient’s blood sugar (but not in all cases), and your care team may adjust your insulin dose (for example, skipping or reducing it). The important point is to monitor the patient’s blood glucose (BG). #USAP #Diabetes #BloodGlucose #MedEd

Surgery day fasting may sound dramatic, but BG checks keep the whole cast in line. Even insulin respects structure when it needs to.
