This is a MUST-read for anyone who works with youth mental health. New Profit has launched Beyond the Headlines: Stories from Youth Mental Health Leaders, a powerful blog series highlighting the work of social entrepreneurs who have been advancing youth mental health long before it was in the national spotlight. The latest piece, Youth Mental Health: Increased Awareness, Persistent Barriers, drives home a critical truth: - Awareness is up. - Funding is growing. But for too many young people—especially youth of color—real access still isn’t there. Main takeaways: - Start Early: Both The F.I.N.D. Design (Nashville) and The Ever Forward Club (Oakland) focus on prevention and support before a crisis hits. - Speak Their Language: Trusted adults who can act as cultural and generational “translators” make care resonate. “Is getting your Master’s in Social Work worth it in today’s climate?” That’s the question someone asked me today. My answer? Two things can be true at once. Yes, the landscape is changing — funding, expectations, and roles are shifting. And yes, the path can still be deeply meaningful if you’re willing to think beyond the traditional job description, operate in your gifts, and adapt to new opportunities. Today reminded me why. On my first day back with the students I’ve supported for years, a need came up — something urgent. I was ready to pay for it myself when a community member, a retired teacher, stepped forward. She not only made a donation but also covered the purchase. Her words: “It’s good to see people working together.” In my 20+ years working alongside schools, mental health teams, and families, I’ve learned this: social workers are not alone. We are part of a powerful ecosystem — teachers, principals, school counselors — all committed to the needs of our most vulnerable. Lessons from Today: 1. Two truths can be true — the field is evolving, but the work is still worth doing if you adapt. 2. Your gifts make room for you — when you work in your strengths, doors open. 3. Community multiplies impact — you don’t have to carry the mission alone. The challenges are real. But when you lead with purpose, ways will be made. All is not lost. We shall overcome. #SocialWork #Education #Community #Leadership #PurposeDriven #SocialImpact

Saying stress doesn’t impact your fundraising is like saying your heart doesn’t affect your running…. just because it’s not doing the stepping. But guess what? It’s still running the show. I see fundraisers push and push, thinking they can outwork the stress. Ignore it. Power through. “Just do more.” But here’s the truth: You cannot build trust-based, connected relationships while your nervous system is in survival mode. Fundraising is about connection. And connection requires regulation. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, foggy, reactive, or just off, the answer isn’t to hustle harder. It’s to downshift your nervous system. It’s to end the chronic stress cycle that’s keeping you stuck. The BEST thing you can do for your fundraising right now? Learn to activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Build safety in your body first…. then take action. I know I live in Berkeley but this really isn’t woowoo. It’s neuroscience. It’s what actually works. Let’s stop pretending our humanity is separate from our fundraising. It’s all connected.

💭 Is it a good time to be alive? Should we still have children in a world this complex? I’ve asked myself this — not just as a parent or a professional, but as a human being navigating uncertainty, headlines, and history in real time. And my answer is: yes. Not because the world is perfect. But because hope is still powerful. Because every child we raise with kindness, values, and courage is one more light in a world that needs it. 🌎 Yes, we face challenges — economic shifts, climate worries, political tension. But we also have access to more connection, more innovation, and more opportunity than ever before in human history. 👨👩👧👦 Raising children in this world isn’t naive — it’s bold. It’s an act of faith, leadership, and love. Let’s stop waiting for the “perfect time” and start becoming the kind of people — and professionals — who make this time worth living in. 🔗 Let’s build families, communities, and businesses with purpose. #PurposeDriven #LeadershipInLife #HopeInAction #BuildTheFuture #RealTalk

Families don’t need to be coerced into voluntary services. They need to be helped. Genuinely. Transparently. Consistently. I’ve sat in too many meetings where professionals say, “Families won’t engage unless we force them.” Verbatim. I’ve heard strategies built on manipulation, disguised control, and so-called “creative incentives.” The worst? When lived experience was in the room, offering truth, vulnerability, and hope, only to have it filtered through a lens of how to make people comply. We can’t build trust on tactics. We build trust by showing up and actually helping. ✅ People want to do well. ✅ People want to feel good about themselves and their lives. ✅ People return to what fills their bucket: with community, care, and compassion. If the support is real, the transformation visible, and the intention felt, the services sell themselves. That’s exactly what we explored in this week’s podcast episode, now live. This one dives into how one Family Resource Center in Virginia is flipping the script: → from service delivery to sustained, generational empowerment. → from manipulation to meaningful relationship. → from stigma to psychological safety. 💥 A child referring another family. 💥 Parents returning not just as clients—but as leaders. 💥 A model that doesn’t just “engage families”—it honors and amplifies them. This episode is a masterclass in what happens when you stop asking, “How do we get families to show up?” …and start asking, “How do we show up for families?” 👂 Listen now. 📢 Share it if you’re ready to build systems rooted in trust, not tactics. 💬 And if you’ve ever been in that kind of meeting, I want to hear from you. How can consistent care transform fear into trust? A story emerges where initial apprehension gradually dissolved as community members witnessed children receiving attentive care, daily nourishment, and education. Over time, individuals within the community themselves became advocates, sharing insights about the safe and nurturing environment. The impact of holistic care—addressing not only physical needs but also fostering morals and values—became evident. This underscores the powerful role of consistent actions in building trust and dispelling fear. Curious if anyone else has experienced this dynamic in community building or leadership?
