🌟 Celebrating Global Volunteer Month: Meet Jim Weiss 🌟
Can you share a memorable experience or moment from your volunteer work that had a significant impact on you or the community you served?
Last year, some colleagues and I participated in a Greater Middlesex & Morris Habitat for Humanity build in New Jersey on one of the hottest days of the summer. The experience was very physically challenging. It made me acutely aware of how fortunate we are to have the comfort of air conditioning and a roof over our heads—things we often take for granted. Knowing that our efforts were helping providing a safe and stable home for a family in need was very rewarding.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start volunteering but isn’t sure where to begin?
It can be scary to show up for a build or meal prep when you don’t have a lot of experience. What has worked for me is to find something that moves me and show up with humility. There is no shortage of ways to plug in so long as you ask questions and are open to coaching.
How has volunteering shaped your perspective on life, work, or the community, and what lessons have you learned through your experiences?
I have always been moved by how kind and non-judgmental organizers and other volunteers are when I struggle with one of the tasks. It has taught me to be more empathetic when I see others struggling in everyday life.
How has C&F supported or encouraged your volunteer efforts, and how does that align with your personal values?
C&F embodies the Fairfax guiding principles of “follow the Golden Rule” and “have fun – at work!” by fostering a culture that values giving back. The company actively spotlights organizations making a difference in our communities and encourages employees to get involved, even if it means stepping away from our desks for a while. It’s exciting to work for a company that prioritizes making a positive impact and empowers its employees to do the same.
Jim, you're one of the good guys!
