THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY MOMENTUM: THE FIRST AFRICAN ENERGY EFFICIENCY CONFERENCE
African Energy Efficiency Conference (AfEEC): A Pioneering Catalyst to Advance Energy Efficiency Across the Continent
Energy efficiency is gaining significant traction in Africa, as demonstrated by the first-ever African Energy Efficiency Conference held in Addis Ababa on December 10–11, 2025. Convened by the African Energy Commission under the theme “Advancing Africa’s Energy Efficiency Agenda through Strategic Partnerships”, this landmark event marked the continent’s first forum exclusively dedicated to energy efficiency policy.
EELA experts actively contributed to several technical sessions, showcasing collaborative work with regional energy efficiency centres and engaging in discussions on policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, and regional programs aimed at driving sustainable growth.
UNIDO Joins the African Energy Efficiency Alliance
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 10 December: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), through its EELA Program, announces its membership in the African Energy Efficiency Alliance (AEEA). Launched at COP29 by the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and operationalized at the African Energy Efficiency Conference, the Alliance serves as a collaborative platform uniting regional energy centres, governments, regional economic communities, development partners, NGOs, research institutions, and private sector actors with a shared objective: accelerating energy efficiency across the African continent.

EELA IN ACTION: HARMONIZING MOTOR EFFICIENCY STANDARDS ACROSS AFRICA
Industrial motors are the backbone of manufacturing and represent one of the greatest opportunities for energy savings. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), these motors consume approximately 45% of industrial electricity globally. In Africa, that figure soars to 70%, based on EELA data.
To address this challenge, EELA has launched target activities to harmonize Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for industrial motors across the regions. The transition to high-efficiency motors has the potential to achieve energy savings of 20–30%, contributing to reduced operational costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions. These improvements are particularly relevant in the African context, where energy demand continues to grow and sustainable development remains a priority.
Through this work, EELA seeks to advance market transformation, foster regional integration, and support Africa’s industrialization agenda. A comprehensive assessment is currently underway to examine the market landscape, policy frameworks, and existing practices related to industrial motors.
