From Philosophy to Practice: Deepening Donor Relationships

From Philosophy to Practice: Deepening Donor Relationships

Chris Gabriel of WISEgenerosity is a guest author and contributor to our Outside Perspectives Series.

We recently connected with Chris Gabriel , author and creator of WISEgenerosity , to share his unique insights in a multi-part series. As a donor, nonprofit board member, consultant, and experienced wealth manager at one of the nation’s leading investment firms, Chris created the WISEgenerosity framework to unlock the potential of giving for individuals and organizations.

In earlier installments of this series, we explored the heart of generosity and shared the concept and purpose behind the WISEgenerosity donor engagement framework. As you may recall, W.I.S.E. stands for:

Well-grounded, Inspired, Satisfying, Effective

We named the donor or client as the central figure in a generosity journey – one where they are supported by professional advisors and nonprofits who serve not as directors but as partners, mentors, and guides.

We also looked at the power of identity – how knowing one’s “why” is the starting point for any personal quest and how the principles of WISEgenerosity can serve as the compass for that meaningful and effective journey.

But a question still lingers: how does all of this work in practice? What happens when abstractions like purpose meet the real-world dynamics of families, finances, and philanthropy? If “why” is the starting point, how do we help donors or clients get there?

The Challenges We Face

The truth is, many organizations and advisors feel stuck when it comes to deepening donor/client engagement. We run into the same challenges:

  • Getting caught in surface-level relationships
  • Lacking a common language and frameworks to identify giver priorities and preferences
  • Overcoming insecurity for givers to give as confidently and as fully as they are able
  • Putting off giving until a never-defined “later”
  • Struggling to engage others (family, colleagues, additional advisors, etc.) in the giving process

At the same time, our donors/clients may begin to feel like afterthoughts. Do nonprofits treat them like ATMs at the intersection of: “we need money and you have money”? Do advisors feel unprepared to ask deeper questions about their clients’ values and interests and to confidently lead discussions about how their financial goals and philanthropic passions can intersect?

Of course, the best advice for fundraisers and advisors – like Foundation Source partners – is to treat the giving process as an opportunity to help the donor/client accomplish something important to them. The questions are not, how do we raise more money, or how do we find more assets to manage? The best question instead is, how do we empower the donor? The answer then is found in uncovering the donor’s “why” for giving. So, let’s dig deeper into the power of “why” and a transformational tool that can help you get there.

Discovering Why: Personal Giving Identity™ (PGI)

A concept introduced in our last edition offers a simple but powerful truth: when you understand how your donors and clients are wired — their personalities, motivations, and unique approaches to giving — you unlock the possibility for deeper, more lasting generosity.

This is not a tactic or a formula. It’s a way of seeing donors/clients for who they really are and then guiding them accordingly.

For instance, assessments that get to the heart of their giving identity, such as The Personal Giving Identity™ (PGI) Assessment, can be valuable.

Identity is the key to any quest. We must know who we are before we know where we should go and how we should get there. PGI delivers awareness of the donors’/clients’ underlying priorities and preferences and then unlocks their potential for success.

Think Myers-Briggs for giving – a tool to help unlock individual traits and tendencies in support of more meaningful and effective outcomes. The resulting profile includes four key components:

WISEgenerosity Personality Type

  • Focused (results, action)
  • Expressive (social, interactive)
  • Considerate (care, compassion)
  • Disciplined (process, outcome)

Preferred Expression of Giving

  • People-helping (charity)
  • Problem-solving (philanthropy)

Primary Driver of Giving

  • Intuitive (heart-giving)
  • Analytic (head-giving)

Underlying Motivation for Giving

  • Compulsion
  • Connection
  • Conviction
  • Compassion

WISEgenerosity Personality Type points to identity. Expression of Giving reveals purpose. Driver of Giving shows wiring. Motivation for Giving illuminates mindset. When fundraisers and advisors know these elements, they are empowered about how to guide donors/clients towards strong and sustained giving.

Putting Why into Action: The “Aha” Moment

An “aha” moment that led to the Personal Giving Identity™ occurred years ago as I was interviewing a highly philanthropic couple for the WISEgenerosity book. I quickly found myself in a deep, personal conversation about what mattered most to them in life – where they had been, where they are, and where they want to go.

Simple questions about giving unlocked floodgates of discussion about meaning and money. I realized in the moment that I had learned more about them and their “why” in 20 minutes than I knew about some clients I had been serving for 20 years. Generosity is a superhighway to the soul.

It suddenly made perfect sense. I knew if I could begin supporting those I served with a deeper level of understanding about what drove them to use their resources, I also would understand how best to support the relationships that would resonate across generations for them, their families, their communities, and the causes they support.

A Ripple Effect

Assessments, such as The Personal Giving Identity™ and accompanying resources, provide a common language, a set of tested practices, and a practical structure for deepening donor/client engagement. They help to produce communication, coordination, and collaboration among everyone involved in the giving process.

When generosity is approached this way, the impact is unmistakable:

  • Nonprofits experience greater donor alignment and larger, longer-term support
  • Advisors deepen trust and become indispensable client guides
  • Families find unity around shared visions and values
  • Communities receive investments that reflect authentic passion and purpose
  • Most importantly, givers experience the joy they were searching for all along

As a starting point, here is a free quiz to reveal your WISEgenerosity Personality Type.

We share it in the hope that it will catalyze, accelerate, and amplify generosity everywhere.

Looking Ahead to Our Final Edition

In our final edition of this series, we will explore the concept of Optimal Giving. This approach to generosity produces the best outcome for everyone involved – donors/clients, the nonprofits being supported, and the professional advisors who serve them both.
