The Frugal Architect
Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon.com, always has fantastic keynotes. This year a key topic was the “Frugal Architect”.
You know that I am convinced that with AWS companies can be more competitive, more secure and more sustainable. And for all this to be true - you need to be frugal. Frugality will mean less costs, less energy, les emissions and easier to secure.
The “Frugal Architect” is the new (online) book of laws for builders and technologists.
Cost-aware applications is a lost art that we need to regain, and sustainability is an absolute necessity.
So insightful!
DESIGN
I. Cost is a Non-Functional Requirement – you have to keep it in mind at all times
II. System that Last Align Cost to Business – keep to close to business partners
III. Architecting is a Series of Trade-Offs – between functional and non-functional requirements
MEASURE
IV. Unobserved Systems Lead to Unknown Costs – measuring costs everywhere precisely changes behaviors
V. Cost Aware Architectures Implement Cost Controls – put mechanisms and don’t rely on good intentions
OPTIMIZE
VI. Cost Optimization is Incremental – eliminate the digital waste and embrace savings opportunities
VII. Unchallenged Success Leads to Assumptions – or never accept again the sentence ‘we have always done it this way’
Just discovered your post… 1 year later, but Werner’s words still resonates deeply! 100% agree on this point. I discovered frugality during my journey as an industrial entrepreneur. It’s more than cost-cutting; it’s a way of life and a mindset that lies at the core of any industrious philosophy.
Very interesting Julien: frugality acculturation is a must in order to boost the Business adoption to the right value.
Julien, thanks for sharing.
Agree Julien, once again a great show from Werner! I had the pleasure to enjoy it onsite once again ❤️
