The Impact of Tariffs on Counterfeit Goods in Global Commerce
Global trade in counterfeit goods was valued at USD 467 billion just a few years ago, and that amount continues to soar despite advances in detecting such imitation products. However, the challenges counterfeits present are now being exacerbated by the unpredictable tariff landscape. Tariffs, designed to serve as a tax on an imported item, may drive up the cost of imported brand name merchandise, making counterfeits – which in some cases can avoid paying tariffs – more appealing to consumers.
